A fatherhood session. In this session, taken on my property just outside of Halifax, NS, I photographed this father and these children trusting each other explicitly. Not only did the gods of light shine on us with utmost favour (along with the mosquitos), so did the real, the raw and the true connections that can’t seem to hide whenever there is trust and love. What stood out to me the most about how they interacted with each other was the willingness to extend hands, in both offering and receiving. There was patient gentleness in the offering and absolute trust in the receiving. It was beautiful to witness.
I’ve always focused a lot of my family photography on the mothers and have even devoted days to motherhood sessions. Their connection always feels easier and less intimidating to capture. Probably because I can relate more, being a mother. This session was special for that reason alone. Too often we forget that fathers are our rocks, that we look to them for just as much guidance, just as much support and just as much love. Its important to document that. Its important for both the father and the children to be able to look at these images and feel their connection to each other. At least, that’s what I think.
